For over two weeks, the hot topic in this part of the country has been basketball. And that even includes Point of View, where I've worked the topic into my editorials three times in a row.
And today makes four, because with the big game between U of L and UK coming up, I can't pass up this last opportunity to get in a final word.
Lately, I've said I think it's silly to get upset over a commercial simply because it brings back memories of a game that was lost 20 years ago. And I've questioned why we're so critical and demanding of our basketball teams when we're so apathetic about the pitiful performance of our legislators.
But don't think for a moment that I don't understand the significance of basketball to fans of all the area schools. Winters around these parts can be cold, dreary affairs, but there's always a game around the corner to heat things up. The tradition of excellence found at UK, U of L and IU is unsurpassed anywhere in the country. And the joy of basketball belongs to everyone, from the business owner in a corporate suite to the coal miner watching at home on TV.
There's a special magic about basketball around here. So congratulations to the Cards and Cats for getting this far. I know it's a cliché, but it's true -- no matter who comes out ahead Saturday, you're both winners.
Here's to a great game.
I'm Bill Lamb and that's my…Point of View.
