Allow Justice to Run Its Course (4/3/12)

Posted: Updated:

I haven't addressed the Trayvon Martin shooting until now because I don't know all the facts. Given what I do know, George Zimmerman's claim of self-defense seems fairly unlikely. But I'm not sure of what went down because I wasn't there.

Unfortunately, many others who weren't there – like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton -- insist they know Zimmerman is guilty of murder, and are demanding justice. Which to them is nothing less than immediate arrest and a guaranteed conviction.

But that isn't how it works.

I hope the reason there's been no arrest yet is because the police are still building a case that'll stand up in court. Because -- barring some blockbuster revelation -- this incident certainly demands a full examination of the evidence by a jury.

But regardless of my instincts, it's possible there may not be enough hard evidence to win a guilty verdict. And that's all that should count.

Unquestionably, too many in the past have paid for crimes they didn't commit while many guilty parties have gone unpunished. And African-Americans have been disproportionately harmed by those errors.

But simply aiming the "lynch mob" mentality in a new direction isn't the answer. Our justice system is far from perfect, but it is still the best in the world. And we must allow it to do its work.

Call and tell us what you think.

I'm Bill Lamb, and that's my…Point of View.
