The Kentucky Wildcats, as expected, have won this year's NCAA championship. And everyone associated with the team deserves praise for their poise and performance.
But it's obvious some of their fans didn't get the memo, because the huge displays of drunken destruction in Lexington following both Final Four games were complete embarrassments to the city, the team, the school and the fan base itself.
I know this idiocy was perpetrated by a small minority of all Wildcat fans. And yes, I also know the fans of many other teams have acted just as shamefully when THEIR teams won titles.
Don't care. Doesn't matter.
Because of these out of control boneheads, people across the nation are being distracted from the accomplishments of the team they supposedly love by a competing, much uglier image of the university and town they represent.
And things aren't helped any by the UK fans who say such behavior is inexcusable, but then turn around and excuse it anyway by chalking it up to "kids just being kids."
This wasn't harmless fun. This was dangerous and destructive. And I'm pretty sure rampaging twenty-somethings – some with guns -- fueled by day-long drinking binges have sacrificed any claim to the "just kids" excuse.
These were simply irresponsible, immature jerks. And they'll get no defense from me.
