LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say a Fern Creek man sitting at his dining room table got the surprise of his life when a bullet flew through his ceiling, barely missing him.

And that was just the beginning.

Police swarmed Keegan Place Apartments, near Billtown and Fairground Roads, just before 11 p.m. Thursday.

According to an arrest report, 44-year-old Charles L. Hatchell, Jr. was in a second floor apartment and was cleaning his gun, when it went off.

The bullet went through the floor and out the ceiling of another man's apartment.

At first, officers couldn't get Hatchell to come out, but he finally emerged and admitted to be drinking earlier in the evening, according to the arrest report.

Police say they found the gun under the bed, along with one of the two spent rounds. Hatchell allegedly told them he flushed the other spent round down the toilet.

A witness listed on the arrest report told police that Hatchell called him after the incident and told him what happened. That man told Hatchell to go downstairs to check on the resident.

Police say Hatchell, "admitted he did not check on the resident for fear of what he might find," and that this behavior shows, "an extreme indifference to the value of human life and created a substantial risk of death or serious injury to the victim."

He was arrested and charged with wanton endangerment and tampering with physical evidence.
