LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- It's a 30-foot tall golden statue now in the heart of Louisville's Main Street.
Workers installed a replica of Michelangelo's famous "David Statue" outside the 21c Hotel, which is well known for its often talked about art displays.
Many people gathered across the street from the statue to get a good look and take pictures.
"It has been a long journey to bring David from Istanbul to Louisville," says Alice Gray Stites, 21c Museum and Hotel Chief Curator.
The replica is one of two called "David (inspired by Michelangelo)". It is the work of Turkish artist Serkan Ozkaya. "It has been brought here for the public to enjoy and react to," says Stites.
People did react, taking pictures with cell phones and cameras and enjoying the new work of art along Main Street.
"I think it is very nice," says Pat Dannhardt, who is visiting Louisville from Bristol, Virginia." The red penguins are also nice, I have not seen them before."
Maria Smith from New York City was impressed with David. "It looks nice in front of the hotel," she says. And although the famous statue by Michelangelo is not wearing any clothes, that does not bother Smith. "That looks good too," she said laughing.
Michelangelo's original David, carved from white marble, remains in Florence, Italy. The Louisville replica is made of fiberglass and steel and painted gold.
21c Museum and Hotel is known for its modern art displays. "21c is committed to bringing great works of art to the public and of finding innovative ways to integrate it into our everyday lives," says Stites.
21c's formula of combining modern art and a boutique hotel is highly successful.
Its owners, Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, are building new such hotels in Cincinnati and Arkansas. Plans are in the works for one in Lexington.
