Lane closure affects morning commute from southern Indiana

Posted: Updated:

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- Drivers in southern Indiana who may have forgotten that road work on Interstate 65 and the Kennedy Bridge got an early reminder this morning.

The right northbound lane of I-65, along with the ramp from Court Avenue to the Kennedy Bridge, was closed for the morning commute and will remain closed through Friday, although commuters will still be able to access the ramps to I-64 and I-71 at the end of that lane.

It was slow going during Monday's morning commute, with drivers who normally use the Court Avenue ramp having to detour to the Second Street Bridge. A stalled motorist around 8 a.m. only added to the backup.

The closing is necessary so crews can make structural repairs to steel on the Indiana side of he bridge. This work is in preparation for major repairs set to start on the bridge deck in mid-June.

Another project on Interstate 65 is also planned for this week that will affect northbound and southbound drivers. Crews are going to start paving the outside shoulders of the stretch of I-65 between the Watterson and the Chestnut Street overpass downtown. This work will take place during the overnight hours.

The right lanes will be closed in both directions from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. every evening beginning Tuesday, May 8. Several entrance ramps to I-65 -- Arthur Street, Warnock and Eastern Parkway -- will also be closed during the construction period, which ends on Friday, May 11.

Starting this weekend, the left lanes in both directions will be shut down, with all lanes expected to be reopen by Monday, May 14.
