Kentucky Air National Guard unit returns to Louisville

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- An elite Kentucky-based unit is back home after a special mission in Afghanistan.

Their missions are top secret and they play a crucial role in defending our nation.  Their considered the most specialized group of airmen in America.  In fact, they typically are not seen on camera.  Monday they came home from a long mission in to Afghanistan.

Family members were clearly happy to see the troops and it goes both ways.   "I've been you know waiting for this day for six months and so it's here and it's kind of's not even happening," says Christine Bobay, wife of an airman.

The airmen are members of Kentucky's 123rd Special Tactics Squadron.  They've been on a six month mission in Afghanistan.  Their job hasn't been easy and neither has waiting at home.

"It's don't hear from 'em for a couple of days and you just like oh my gosh, is he okay you know what's going on?"

"Primary job is to provide air to ground, kind of a liaison, as an air to ground liaison for special operations ground troops," says Tech Sgt. Harley Bobay, Ky Air National Guard.

Tech Sgt. Bobby understands they have an important job, but says so do the people they leave behind here at home.  "They've helped me along this whole adventure as well and in our training too 'cause they know how long that we have to be gone and they know that they have to take care of things so the stress isn't on us while we're away."

The plan is to enjoy the family and get lots of rest, however, because this is a specialized unit, they know the next call to action could come as early as tomorrow or the next day.

"Hopefully get a little bit of time on ground but it is true we are part of a special operations unit so at any second we could get called back," says Tech Sgt. Bobay.
