Dirtfest

Visitors to the free event will discover what dirt is made of, how we move dirt and what lives in dirt.
Activities at Dirtfest will include separate areas designed to explore dirt in countless ways. At the Experiment and Examine station, visitors will compare different types of dirt and explore the affect that water can have on rocks and soil. At the Explore and Excavate station, visitors can investigate past and present dirt to examine fossils, animal tracks and signs of life. At the Experience and Express station, visitors will explore the many ways we move dirt from sifting and shoveling to sorting and romping.

Library's How-To Festival

For those who want to learn to juggle, swing dance, kayak, raise chickens, pick a winning horse at the track, knit, make beer, start a conversation, fold origami - and much more -- the Louisville Free Public Library will become a one-stop How-To extravaganza.
Throughout the library's free five-hour How-To Festival, attendees can also learn about keeping bees, packing a small suitcase for a big trip, cooking a perfect omelet, composting, Zumba, or saving money with coupons.
Dozens of local experts will join the library in a lively series of lessons, hands-on experiences and panels - from a 5-minute demonstration of how to use chopsticks to 45 minutes of salsa dancing or tai chi.
Long-time Courier-Journal columnist Bob Hill who will talk about how to write well. Spalding University president and adventurer Tori Murden McClure will share how to assemble the perfect survival kit. Cindi Sullivan from 84WHAS will talk about how to feed a family from a garden. Louisville Public Media news director Gabe Bullard and reporter Erin Keane, emcees of Louisville's performances of The Louisville Moth StorySLAM, will talk about how to tell a great story.
Other presenters with a passion will demonstrate how to teach dogs new tricks, run a great meeting, try yoga, cook fish, pick great wines on a budget, barbeque like a champion, improve a jump shot, repair a bike, bird-watch, skate like a Derby City Roller Girl, win at Scrabble, publish a book, commute to work on your bike or fix a flat on your bike. . . even create an art car.

2nd annual Indiana Fiber and Music Festival

Admission and parking are free.
This year attendees will be see fiber booths from 8 states, along with a variety of workshops, demonstrations and activities. Music will be provided by some of the finest local musicians on two stages.
Workshops this year include knitting, weaving, Appalachian dulcimer, dyeing spinning and card fiber art. Demonstrations include a sheep to shawl, sock knitting machine, lace making, as well as of the vendors will be doing their own demonstrations in their booths. Rit Dye, Tulip Dye and the festival will be sponsoring a tie-dye t-shirt workshop for children 12 and under. Each child will receive a free t-shirt which they make while receiving information on cotton and the dyeing process.
Some of the local musicians participating this year are The Troubadours of Divine Bliss, Bomar and Ritter, West of Dublin, and David Dwyer to name a few.

Over 90 dance students from the Sacred Heart School for the Arts Dance Department, age 3 to 18, will perform in this full-length production, which will includes Dorothy, Toto, the Wicked Witch, Cowardly Lion, Tin Man, Scarecrow, and all of the other unforgettable Emerald City characters! This spectacular production boasts costumes, sets and stage effects. "Soul Surfer" kicks off 2012 Free Summer Movies Schedule

A movie about triumph over personal tragedy and faith, 2011's "Soul Surfer" will kick off this years' Free Summer Movies season sponsored by members of the Louisville Metro Council.
"Soul Surfer" tells the story of surfer Bethany Hamilton. At the age of thirteen, Hamilton lost her arm to a shark attack. The film details the events surrounding this attack and her struggle during the aftermath. AnnaSophia Robb stars as Bethany Hamilton, Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt star as Hamilton's parents.

Southern Indiana Kids Plant a Park

City Pride, Jeffersonville's beautification department decided to undertake planting a children's garden to give kids a reason to visit the park, and introduce them to the idea of contributing to their community. The program was centered around respect - respect for yourself, respect for your community, and respect for the planet.
David Julius of Walnut Ridge designed a "kid friendly" garden with teepees, cartoon characters, and a sunflower playhouse. Steel Dynamics provided their maintenance department to construct the park components.
Maple Elementary and Spring Hill Elementary schools are two schools close to the park that have been threatened with closure in recent years due to budget cuts. Both schools are in low income zones, and City Pride worked with the fourth graders to start seedlings, and go over the basics of gardening, and keeping the community clean and pretty.

The Urban Bourbon exhibit is a direct tie to the city of Louisville's Urban Bourbon Trail passport program which encourages visitors to sample the culture of Bourbon at various establishments in the metro area. Located at the historic Churchill Downs race track, the Kentucky Derby Museum will showcase the history and heritage of Louisville's involvement in the bourbon industry as it grew along with the horse industry and the Kentucky Derby.

This local initiative is designed to provide opportunity to those who may have marketable items but no budget for shop space. It also offers the members of our Louisville community an opportunity to come together, mix and mingle, buy, sell, and trade - all in a unique and festive atmosphere with local cuisine and beverages, live music, and entertainments for the whole family. Though similar to markets in progressive cities like Brooklyn, NY or Portland, OR , this monthly bazaar represents our unique Louisvillian culture.
The May market will have dozens of vendors and collectors offering a wide range of goods and wares for "re-purpose" including: books, records, bicycles, antiques, vintage motor items, cool old junk, used tools, and other curiosities. There will also be seeds & plants, fresh-cut-flowers, local fine arts and crafts ,farm-fresh goods, live music, performing arts, and more. The Flea Off Market will also have local restaurants, food trucks, seasonal beers. This is a family friendly event.

Join the Riverside Garden Club for a stroll through the grounds of Riverside (weather permitting). We'll meet at the Visitors Center to begin. Bring your knowledge (or lack thereof) of native plants and animals to share with other walkers. Learn how nature supplied many of the everyday needs of people in the 1800s and before. See for yourself the variety of native wildlife that still fourishes on the Riverside property!
This walk won't be overly strenuous, but be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring some water! We should be back at the Visitors Center by 11:30 am.

The best way of dealing with people is always with courtesy and understanding of their needs. Our panelists, blind and sighted, will give frank answers to questions about blindness and demonstrations of when and how best to help. 19th annual Throo the Zoo 5K Run/Walk

One of Louisville's most unique road events, the course takes participants "throo" the Zoo-past the tigers, polar bears, grizzly bears, sea lions/seals, monkeys, elephants, bongos, Aadax, rhino, giraffes, zebra and wart hogs.
Participants will receive electronic timing chips along with their registration to monitor results and times.
Strollers are welcome, as well as walkers and runners alike. However, no roller blades/skates or pets are allowed.

7th Annual Joe B & Denny Celebrity Golf Scramble

This event is open to the public. Player fee is $150 and a foursome is $600. Each foursome plays with a sports celebrity or a leader in the community. Prior to the shotgun start, Coach Hall and Crum interview many of the celebrity guests on their live radio broadcast from 10 a.m. until noon. THE LOUISVILLE QUEST!

The Quest is a fun, competitive way to explore downtown Louisville.
The Louisville Quest! is a race, scavenger hunt and historical, sight-seeing tour, all rolled into one. Teams of 2 - 5 participants will compete as they walk (or run) from one location to another in downtown Louisville. The teams will perform activities, answer challenge questions and solve puzzles to get to their final destination in the least amount of time - All for fun and to discover what downtown Louisville has to offer!
The Louisville Quest! targets annual convention visitors and regional corporations as well as local residents to provide an educational and entertaining event. The event will give participants a glimpse of the sights, museums, restaurants and stores that downtown Louisville has to offer, enticing them to return for future visits.
Each Saturday, participants will run one of five routes that include locations such as 21C, Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, the Belle of Louisville and the Belvedere, with challenges along the way.
Each Quest ends with an Award Ceremony where teams earn bragging rights and token awards at a downtown restaurant or other fun location.
