LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin has fired her grandson, who was working for Metro Government. That's after he was arrested several times and was being paid even while he was in jail.
Gary Bohler has worked in Shanklin's office since 2003, making $25 an hour in the part-time position. He has faced about 30 charges, including a May 5th arrest on domestic violence charges. Prosecutors want to send him to prison because of those repeated arrests.
Shanklin has maintained that she did not give her grandson special treatment, saying she has worked with other ex-offenders to help them get their lives back together.
But on Tuesday she released a statement saying, in part, "Unfortunately through bad decisions (poor choices) of my own admission I am faced with my biggest challenge to date. Sometimes when we see the potential in someone, we want to help them become better people and our desires to help override the reality that we cannot."
The statement went on to say that she has raised all her children to be accountable and that, "sometimes family can disappoint us more than the outside world."
