Proposed race-day drug ban resurfaces in Kentucky

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has decided to continue debate on a proposal that would ban the use of an anti-bleeding drug on race days.

Commission members Wednesday voted against a motion to table the issue for a year and a public hearing will be held next month. The proposal would phase out race-day use of the drug furosemide in graded or listed stakes races, including the Kentucky Derby.

If approved, Kentucky would be the first state in the United States to take the action against the drug, which is banned internationally.

Furosemide is marketed as Lasix and Salix and is the only medication allowed to be given to horses on race day in the U.S.
