LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man is dead this morning and his estranged wife is hospitalized after police say he shot her through the window of a home in Fern Creek, then turned the gun on himself.
42-year-old Derek White was pronounced dead at U of L Hospital at 12:42 Tuesday morning of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
According to police, the woman's estranged husband, later identified as White, showed up at her house on Haven Manor Way near Wood Haven Country Club and started tapping on the window just before midnight Monday.
Once he got her attention, police say he fired several gunshots through the window. LMPD officials say one of the gunshots struck the woman in the arm. Police believe White then turned the gun on himself.
We're told the woman's injuries are not life-threatening.
Police were scouring the neighborhood early Tuesday, and cordoned off four houses with crime scene tape.
"Obviously, in a case like this or in any case, we make the crime scene as large as we need to for scene integrity and things of that nature, said LMPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell. "However, it's a very tragic situation that happened and unfortunately it ended in death."
Neighbors we spoke with say it's normally a quiet community and were surprised by the violence.
"You wish you could have said something," said Yolanda Johnson. "You never know."
