Driver slams into tree during NE Ind. police chase

Posted: Updated:

AVILLA, Ind. (AP) -- Police in northeastern Indiana say a driver was taken to a hospital after he went off a road and crashed into a tree while fleeing from officers.

State police say that a trooper had stopped the car for speeding on Interstate 69 in southern Steuben (stoo-BEN') County early Wednesday, when the driver took off. The trooper broke off the chase as the car entered Kendallville on U.S. 6.

Police say Kendallville officers later spotted the car again and the driver fled toward the Noble County town of Avilla, where the car went through an intersection and slammed head-on into a tree about 50 yards off the road.

Police say the 33-year-old driver suffered a broken leg and that investigators believe he had been drinking alcohol.
