It's construction season as we head into Memorial Day Weekend

Posted: Updated:

Louisville, KY (WDRB) -- Drivers will be hitting the roads Friday for the long holiday weekend. AAA estimates nearly 35 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this holiday weekend. But while you try to head to your destinations, expect some delays.

Andrea Clifford with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says, "This weekend the right lane of I-65 southbound will be closed between the Chestnut Street overpass and the Watterson for paving work in the right lane and as part of the paving we're having to close a series of entrance and exit ramps."

The Transportation Cabinet is hoping to have this work done before the Street Rod Nationals and the State Fair in August.

Clifford says, "We are not going to have any lane closures on the Kennedy during the holiday weekend, crews are doing preparatory work. We had lane closures on I-65 and it will be tonight where they will be working underneath some of the ramps that go up to the bridge on 65."

Under the Kennedy Bridge, crews have installed a work platform to get ready for more construction.

Construction Interstate 71 northbound however is temporarily finished. Bridge deck repairs finished early, so all lanes are open and there will be no construction here for Memorial Day weekend.

Clifford says, "Friday, June the 1st starting at 8 o'clock that night, all lanes of northbound 71 will be closed to allow for the paving on section between I-64 and downtown and the Watterson Expressway."

Another major project is I-265 at U-S 60.  This is expected to wrap up next month.

Clifford says, "They finished the paving on northbound I-265 in that area. Tomorrow night they've got to finish paving the exit ramp from northbound 265 to U.S. 60 and currently the contractor is scheduled to begin next week on milling and resurfacing of Shelbyville Road underneath the Snyder."
