LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A stray tire causes a fatal accident Thursday afternoon on I-65 in Clark County.

Authorities say the accident took place shortly after 4 p.m. in the southbound lanes.

45-year-old Edward Szewczyk of Delmar, Delaware, was riding his motorcycle with his wife, Lisa, when he crashed into a tire.

Both were thrown from the motorcycle.

The Clark County Coroner declared Lisa Szewczyk dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

Edward Szewczyk was airlifted to University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

An Indiana State Police investigation finds that two rear tires had rolled off a tractor-trailer that had been traveling on I-65 near Exit 7.

One of the tires rolled into the median, but the other rolled into the roadway in the far left lane.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

Neither Edward nor Lisa Szewczyk were wearing helmets.
