Coroner: Gunman in Indiana standoff from Texas

Posted: Updated:

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) -- A coroner says the gunman killed in a northwestern Indiana police standoff was a Texas man.

The man was identified Saturday as 48-year-old Roy L. Ferguson of Fulshear, Texas.

Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris says Ferguson suffered three gunshot wounds, two to the head and one to the upper right torso.

Harris says it's unlikely all three wounds were from the same weapon, but that won't be confirmed until an autopsy is performed. That autopsy hasn't been scheduled yet because of the Memorial Day weekend.

Police say Ferguson had a handgun. They say officers exchanged gunfire with him at the start of the standoff Friday at Prudential Executive Group Real Estate office in Valparaiso.

The coroner says Ferguson died two hours after the standoff ended.
