Pitts Point, KY (WDRB) -- Harold Dawson has family in Pitts Point, KY – lots of family. The trouble is the once thriving town no longer exists.
Pitts Point, KY was purchased by the Army in 1942 and is now part of Ft. Knox. Each Memorial Day, the Army opens up the post to allow families to come visit their ancestors.
"To me it's the town that lives once a year because you're only allowed in here once a year," said Dawson, who visited the Army post Monday.
Dawson's goal was re-acquaint himself with his great great grandfather - a Confederate solider.
"And to be able to come back one time and say thank you folks is what I enjoy doing," said Dawson.
More than a hundred cemeteries still exist on Fort Knox, some which have never been found. Ft Knox's 109,000 acres are mostly used for training. Many of cemeteries exist near the tank range, but are far removed from the line of fire. The real danger to these graves is mother nature. Many are cracked and have been repaired by the Army.
"For me it's just, the notion of paying respect," said Dawson, who brought is family down for their visit Monday.
On this day, as nearly 900 people gather to visit the cemeteries, Harold Dawson is like so many - trying to capture a clearer picture of his family.
"A clearer picture - oh yeah - it's great I love it," said Dawson.
