SLIDESHOW: Massive fires may have been sparked by lightning

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Massive flames were shooting out of the roof of a home on Stonelilly Drive in Jeffersonville, Ind. Tuesday morning.

Fire officials think lightning hit the house.

Lightning is also being blamed for starting an apartment fire at 7th St. and Shipp Ave. where University of Louisville students live.

Sprinklers and the alarm did not go off because the lightning strike knocked out the system.

Students describe hearing the sound of an explosion.

"You could just see this billowing smoke, so I just started running up and down the hallway telling people to get out, and then running down the second floor, first floor just trying to get people out," said Will Salmons.

U of L is working to move the two dozen students affected into other on-campus housing.
