SLIDESHOW: Sheppard Square used for fire training exercise

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Smoke and flames shot out of the Sheppard Square housing project on Thursday, but it was all a training exercise.

Louisville Fire and Rescue is using five buildings to help 30 recruits with training.  They're learning how to attack fires and put them out , as well as how to conduct search and rescue operations.

Capt. Sal Melendez with Louisville Fire and Rescue says, "We've covered a lot of classroom work, now is the time to put it hands-on.  We've been here since yesterday, will be here for the next couple of weeks on and off to make sure these firefighters get to the point they are more familiar."

The recruits are expected to graduate in July.

Sheppard Square is currently undergoing a revitalization.  The Louisville Metro Housing Authority says the buildings will soon be demolished to make way for new units that could be available next year.
