WITNESSES: Man accused of trying to kill officer was high on mushrooms

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Witnesses say the man accused of trying to kill a Louisville police officer was high on psychedelic mushrooms.  27-year-old Joseph Starcher is accused of shooting officer Andrea Rice several times with her own gun.

She was responding to a domestic violence call in Okolona when she was attacked by a naked and bloody man.

A psychiatrist told jurors that the drugs made Starcher deranged and incompetent, but Prosecutor Chris Foster fired back:  "Is there any evidence that he's incompetent today?"

Psychiatrist Dr. Robert Granacher replied, "I have not examined him today, but the way he's acting in court, I would say it's highly unlikely."

Starcher is also accused of shooting his girlfriend and neighbor.  All three recovered.

The trial is expected to wrap up Friday.
