JCPS implementing summer food program

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WDRB) -- Summer break means no more hot meals for many students across Kentuckiana.

A program funded by the United States Department of Agriculture is providing two hot meals a day to students at Jefferson County Public Schools.

The USDA Summer Food Services Program started June 4 at 47 sites across Jefferson County.

Students are provided one breakfast and one lunch for free. Officials say it's a necessity for many students.

"Some students through Jefferson County they say that this is the only hot meal that they can get is breakfast and lunch and a lot of students come to school hungry and to provide the meals over summer that insures that they don't go hungry through the summer without our schools," said Jason Mills, JCPS Nutrition Services Manager.

The program is up and running at elementary, middle and high schools.
