LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Floyd County's 911 dispatch is receiving a major upgrade this week. It is a new digital system that will double the number of calls Floyd County 911 dispatchers can respond to, without having to hire more people.
Floyd County Sheriff Darrell Mills explains, "We can double the intake volume of calls with the same expense that we were paying out already in salary."
The new 911 system has been in the works for several months. It also comes after a failed attempt to merge the city and county dispatch systems.
Sheriff Mills says the new system will help eliminate missed or dropped calls: "And you've got four or five phones going because you have an accident going at the same time that you have your wife at home, and you're on third shift, and somebody suspicious around the house. You want them to be able to get to the people they need, which is the services here -- police, fire, or EMS."
The new system will be up and running Tuesday morning.
