LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Mall St. Matthews has been around since the early 1960's, but it has never had a movie theater.
That is about to change, but it will be another year or so before movies come to the mall.
A 10-screen theater complex will soon be built on the west side of the mall in an area that used to be occupied by the Dillard's department store, but has been vacant for several years.
"It will fill an entertainment use that currently is lacking at the mall," says general manager David Jacoby.
Demolition work is now underway and will be completed by August. The construction will begin then and the project is expected to be completed late spring of next year.
Cinemark, one of the largest movie chain companies based in Plano, Texas, is building the complex at Mall St. Matthews.
It already operated Tinseltown in Springhurst, which just underwent some major renovation work.
Shoppers at the Mall are pleased about the plans since the area has not had a movie theater for years.
"We'll have something other to do than just shop," says Shaquan McDonald. "We can come in here and see a movie. I think it's awesome."
Liz Jerrell agrees. "I think it will be really nice," she says. "There aren't any movie theaters around this area, so it will be more convenient."
The new theater might be good for business at the mall. "Theaters usually bring in a lot of foot traffic," adds Jacoby. "It will help our restaurants and food court."
