LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say a Louisville man was arrested Thursday night after he beat a cat to death with a broom.

According to an arrest report, officers were called to a residence on E. St. Catherine St., near S. Floyd St., shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday, after a witness contacted them to report that a cat had been killed.

When officers arrived, a woman allegedly told them that 25-year-old Shaun A. McKinney had beaten her cat to death the night before.

When police confronted McKinney about the incident, he allegedly told them he became "irate" after the cat jumped on a chair and knocked a second cat to the ground the night before.

"The suspect became irate and chased the cat into the kitchen where he grabbed a broom and struck it three or four times," police say. "The suspect then left the apartment and returned a short time later. He found the cat was still motionless in the kitchen. He then struck it with the broom several more times and kicked it to see if it was still alive."

By this time, police say, the cat was dead.

Police say McKinney, "intentionally inflicted pain on the cat, which resulted in its death."

Metro Animal Services removed six other cats from the residence, according to the arrest report.

McKinney was charged with torturing a cat resulting in death, cruelty to animals and criminal mischief.
