Statewide partnership aims to match up veterans with job openings

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- A statewide partnership and web resource have the aim of matching up veterans with job openings in Kentucky.

The Hiring Heroes partnership hopes to give veterans better access to training and educational opportunities, job fairs, and hiring incentives.

"After serving our country, many of these men and women return home to an uncertain future due to a tough job market," Kentucky Gov. Beshear said on Friday. "It is now our turn to serve them. We are calling on Kentucky's employers to consider veterans for available positions. Because these are disciplined and skilled workers who display pride, leadership and professionalism, hiring Kentucky heroes makes good business sense. It is also the right thing to do for our veterans and their families."

Five employment assistance workshops have already been held across the Commonwealth, and more than 80 percent of those who attended say they found jobs.  Some were hired at the job fairs.  Four more workshops are scheduled this year.

The Hiring Kentucky Heroes web portal is http://HiringKyHeroes.ky.gov.  Employers can learn about tax credits, online job postings, and other topics there, while veterans will find out about education and training opportunities.
