Tighter security eyed for trial in child's death

Posted: Updated:

TIPTON, Ind. (AP) -- Tipton County officials say they may limit access to the courthouse, install a metal detector and use trained dogs to search the building during the trial of a man accused of fatally beating a 4-year-old boy over a potty-training accident.

James Rice faces charges of battery causing death and neglect and reckless homicide in the November 2010 death of Dylan Cast.

Rice's trial is scheduled to begin June 26, and the Kokomo Tribune reports it is expected to draw a large crowd of family members and friends.

Tipton Circuit Court Judge Thomas Lett says final decisions on security will rest with law enforcement officials.
