Agencies: Immigration policy change will help many

Posted: Updated:

GARY, Ind. (AP) -- Agencies working with illegal immigrants say President Barack Obama's decision to stop deporting people who came to the U.S. as children will help many such immigrants who've been assimilated into American culture.

Executive Director Lawrence Sharp of the International Community Alliance in Gary says the new policy will help illegal immigrants who've been in the U.S. since childhood become fully engaged members of this country. He tells the Post-Tribune (http://bit.ly/LVN0Gt ) that if they had to return to their native countries, they might not know how to get by.

Under the change, illegal immigrants with no criminal histories can avoid deportation if they meet certain criteria such as proving they were brought to the U.S. before they turned 16 and haven't turned 30 yet.
