LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A former Shelby County special education teacher who pleaded guilty to sex charges has avoided jail.
On Monday, a judge sentenced 42-year-old Shannon Hirchert to five years of probation. Hirchert taught at Martha Layne Collins High School in Shelbyville, but later resigned after being accused of having sexual encounters with two 17-year-old male student aides.
Hirchert accepted a plea deal last month. If she violates the terms of her probation, she could be sent to prison for seven years.
Hirchert was also ordered to register as a sex offender, have no contact with minors, and to surrender her Kentucky teaching license. She's not allowed to apply for another teaching license anywhere else in the country.
