FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP/WDRB) -- Two lawmakers from Louisville have refused to be paid for a weeklong special legislative session held earlier this year, returning nearly $7,000 to the state treasury.
Information obtained by The Associated Press through an open records request shows Democratic state Reps. Tom Riner and Jim Wayne, both of Louisville, were the only lawmakers out of 138 serving in the House and Senate who refunded their salaries and expenses.
Gov. Steve Beshear had called lawmakers back to Frankfort in April to pass a $4.5 billion transportation budget after they failed to do so during a regular legislative session that spanned nearly four months.
Lawmakers met for five additional days in late April to finish their work, costing taxpayers more than $300,000.
Riner returned $5,000 on June 6. Wayne returned $1,857.76 on June 7.
