Gov. Beshear promotes law against drug use by miners

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear is promoting a new law that permanently revokes the certifications of miners who fail drug tests a third time.

The General Assembly passed the law earlier this year. First-time offenders can seek treatment, and after that they can have their mining certifications reinstated.

The governor says the law sends a clear message that drug and alcohol abuse in Kentucky's mines will not be tolerated.

Beshear says the law will help miners get home safely to their families at the end of their shifts while also requiring those with addictions to seek treatment.
