LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville inmate allegedly posed as a jail employee -- and then an attorney -- in a botched escape attempt.
According to court documents, his plans were foiled by an alert employee of the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections. The corrections officer says he was leaving the jail at the end of his shift, when he noticed 29-year-old James P. Armstrong walking closely behind him, "as I was about to exit through the first door to the security vestibule."
The corrections officer immediately recognized Armstrong as an inmate, "currently incarcerated in the passive booking area."
Court documents say Armstrong was in nice dress clothes and, when confronted, told the corrections officer that he was a jail employee. When confronted again, he allegedly said he was an attorney visiting his client, but was unable to produce a card.
Authorities say Armstrong had a jail armband on, "however, it was completely covered up by the sleeve of his shirt."
He was charged with first degree attempted escape.
