HENRYVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- A major donation today will help rebuild homes in tornado-ravaged Henryville, Ind.
Ellen Smith checks the status of her Henryville home every day, waiting for that last nail to go in and that one day when she can return.
Smith's residence is part of the first wave of 100 homes being rebuilt and given back to storm victims with the help of the Henryville Community Church.
"When the tornado hit, and I lost it, I didn't know what I was going to do," she said.
Volunteers and donations have been coming in from across the country to work in this community. Their progress is evident. While many homes in the area still wear the scars of the March 2 tornados, the house across the street from Smith's nears completion, and the foundation has been laid for the family next door.
New giving keeps coming.
Today the Home Builders Associations in Louisville and Indiana presented Habitat for Humanity with $10,000 to launch a new campaign for storm victims in the area.
"We're calling it, 'Raise the Roof Over Southern Indiana,'" said Gina Leckron of Habitat for Humanity. "We'll be building 20 homes in a week."
The Twin Oaks subdivision will be the site of Habitat's 10 homes in Henryville. The other 10 will be built in the Madison and Chelsea communities.
"The original designs are three-, four- and five-bedroom models," said Bill Moriarty of Habitat for Humanity. "They are designed to match the neighborhood."
Leaders say the habitat campaign will work hand-in-hand with the church's 100-home effort.
For Smith, every donation and every bit of construction, is one step closer to normal.
Habitat has not selected the recipients of its 20 homes yet.
