Boys and Girls Club reopening delayed

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- It seems like the Parkland Boys and Girls Club will not be reopening by the end of next week as officials had hoped.

The club was shut down last fall because of a lack of funds.

The new owner hoped to reopen the facility next week.

Volunteers, including 50 workers from Humana, were busy painting and cleaning the building Saturday, but there is still more work to be done.

The president of the Boys and Girls Club says no date has been set for closing on the property.

The recent shootings in the Parkland area that left three people dead sparked new interest in reopening the building.

"It's summertime. Kids are out of school. Lots of idle time. Idle time sometimes means much time for mischief and things like that. If you get kids the opportunity to go places and constructive things to do, get them off the streets. It's always a good thing," says volunteer Rod Holt.

Officials are hoping for a large number of volunteers again next weekend.
