LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The crime took less than 20 seconds: Walk in. Walk out - cash in hand. Now a New Albany, Ind. man is charged with stealing a donation jar meant to help pay for another man's funeral.
42-year-old Charles "Rusty" McMillin faces theft charges after the jar was taken from the Clark Gas and Food Mart in Palmyra, Ind. on June 22.
Surveillance footage shows McMillin entering the store and leaving with the donation jar in a matter of seconds.
Court records show McMillin admitted to the crime, telling police, "I've done a boneheaded thing and I need to make it right."
The store manager, Gavy Sangh, says McMillin came into the food mart claiming it was his father who died, thanked him and then walked out with the donation jar and its contents – $44. The money was intended to help pay for the funeral of 63-year-old Samuel Kemp, who lost a long battle with throat cancer.
A family member reported that the jar was missing. An investigation led to McMillin's arrest. He was taken to the Harrison County Jail. The donation money was not recovered.
