Lawsuit says registered sex offenders in Indiana should be able to chat online

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Should registered sex offenders be allowed to chat online on sites like Facebook?  The debate over the issue is back on track in Indiana.

The ACLU of Indiana filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of a registered sex offender who was convicted of child exploitation in Marion County.

Kenneth Falk, the ACLU's Indiana Director, says, "As much as we might dislike what people have done in the past, when we let them out of prison and say their rights have been restored to them, their rights should be restored to them."

The sex offender wants to chat online for business and personal reasons, but a U.S. District Court judge ruled against him, claiming those sites have created a virtual playground for sexual predators to lurk.

The ACLU is appealing.
