LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB Fox 41)---We're just days away from NASCAR's Quaker State 400 at the Kentucky Speedway, which means thousands of fans will soon be arriving.
Last year there was one main reason why some people canceled reservations in nearby La Grange.
It all came down to alcohol.
Last year, some fans decided not to stay in La Grange when they realized it wasn't a "wet" city.
Since La Grange is "moist", alcohol can only be found in restaurants that seat 100 people or more.
This doesn't always sit well with hotel guests.
"I've actually had a couple people. They don't have bars in the hotel, so they've left," says Susan Boren, the Assistant Manager at the Holiday Inn Express.
Susan Boren is the Assistant Manager at the Holiday Inn Express, right off of I-71 in La Grange.
They plan to be full for the big race this weekend, but last year had 4 to 5 cancellations, some of which were due to alcohol.
Across the street at the Best Western, an employee says they also had a few guests do the same.
"Sometimes we have a lot of people, especially around NASCAR, asking about where's the nearest place to buy beer and why isn't a wet county," Susan Boren says.
Mayor Bill Lammlein says that may all change next month. A vote on July 24th will decide whether alcohol can be sold in the city.
"It will enable us to have three liquor stores, and smaller restaurants sizes to serve wine and beer," says La Grange Mayor Bill Lammlein.
He's hoping it will keep people from traveling to other cities, especially during big events like the NASCAR race
"If they want to buy alcohol they go into Jefferson County, so we're hoping to keep that dollar here in our city," says Mayor Bill Lammlein.
"If they pass it next month, then it will definitely be a plus for us," says Susan Boren.
A vote will be held on July 24th to determine whether La Grange will become a "wet" city.
The Mayor says a survey from their local newspaper recently found a majority of people were for this change.
