KU: stolen copper leads to Nelson Co. power outage

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A Kentucky Utilities official says electricity has been knocked out for more than 1,200 customers in Nelson County after cooper was stolen from a power substation.

The outage could mean a warm evening in the midst of the warmest June temperatures on record.

KU spokeswoman Chris Whelan says power is expected to be restored to the customers by late Thursday night.

She says the outage is affecting 1,225 customers in the Bloomfield and Fairfield areas in Nelson County. The outage occurred as Kentucky was hit by a heat wave.

Whelan says someone broke into the substation and stripped away copper wires.
