Kentucky State Senator Tim Shaughnessy resigns

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Senator Tim Shaughnessy says he is resigning as of Friday.  Shaughnessy is a Louisville Democrat who was first elected to the Senate in 1988.

Shaughnessy said in November of last year that he would not run for re-election.  He cited several reasons for his resignation, including that there are no plans for a special session before the November elections, and no pressing issues facing committees he's assigned to.

He also mentioned that the Democratic candidate for his seat, Morgan McGarvey, is running unopposed in November, saying, "This action will further position Morgan as the 'Senator-elect from Jefferson 19' and I hope will enhance his efforts in establishing the appropriate relationships within the Senate."

Shaughnessy said he will always be grateful for the opportunity to have served in Kentucky's Senate and thankful for the support of voters.
