Metro police preparing for holiday traffic

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB)--Metro police will start their annual 4th of July detail early this year.

"We basically put people where the crime and the fatal maps are happening," says Lt. Joe Seelye, LMPD Traffic Commander.

Lt. Seelye says,"Starting Saturday and Sunday we will be running enforcement details all throughout the day and as well as DUI enforcement."

The extra detail will also target motorcycle riders...who have not had a good year so far.

"We're up about 300-percent on that...last year at this time we had 2 motorcycle fatalities...this year we've had 9...over 60 percent of the time the motorcyclist is at fault," says Lt. Seelye.

Metro police will also dedicate lots of attention to Louisville Waterfront Park.  They're expecting more than a hundred thousand people are expected to attend this year's Independence Festival.

Ashley Smith is with Waterfront Development corporation.  She says,"We're starting late in the day at 5 o'clock because the heat is always a concern in July."

Organizers are expecting a large crowd and have brought in some help to make sure everyone stays hydrated.

"We're partnering with the Louisville Water Company and they're providing a Louisville Pure Tap to go station," says Smith.

"A lot of people don't realize how hot it is until they've been out there for a while and start feeling bad," says Jesse Yarbrough, with Metro EMS.

Meanwhile, health experts tell us what to look for in yourself or the people around you when it comes to heat related issues.  Yarbrough says,"A lot of people suffer from nausea and vomiting...they'll feel dizzy...other people will notice that they're not acting normally we call that an altered level of continuousness."

And Metro Police will have extra details in place next weekend as well.
