LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A murder in a quiet part of Old Louisville has shaken up neighbors. Those neighbors' lives were put in danger, as the gunman fired off several shots.
Neighbors say they first thought it was firecrackers they were hearing, but heard more than a dozen "pop" noises going off and quickly realized it was gunfire. It is a pretty spot in Old Louisville -- Ormsby Avenue. People feel safe enough to ride around on bikes, and take their dogs on walks.
Sunday night by 1st Street, Ormsby Avenue was filled with chaos as gunfire erupted. Ambulances, detectives, and police cars flooded the street, and neighbors say a helicopter circled overhead. Crime scene tape, bullet holes, and a teddy bear on blood-stained concrete are left behind.
"It's crazy, you know, to know it's supposed to be a quiet neighborhood," said Milus Barnes, a neighbor who saw the crime scene. Barnes heard gunshots and took cover with family, but soon realized how close they were to the murder scene. "When you look out the window and you just see a body and a police officer over the body," said Barnes, "it's like crazy."
The victim, 35-year-old Shawntta Young, was found dead on a sidewalk, but in the line of fire was a building that was hit with at least five bullets, which could have hurt more people.
Police say Young died at the scene with no suspects in sight. Residents just want their quiet neighborhood to remain peaceful.
"To see a body laying in front of your house is just -- what's gonna happen next?" asked Barnes.
