LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Four months after powerful tornadoes tore through Henryville, the small town marked a big milestone Monday as the 10,000th person to volunteer to help the rebuilding effort was welcomed.
Zakariya King from Little Rock, Arkansas says he was caught off guard when he was showered with confetti and applause as he into the Henryville Community Church around 8 a.m. Monday.
"I thought 'is this really going to happen? Did they mess up somewhere?' It was kind of like surprising," King said. "I was kind of scared for a second."
King says he is part of a group called Higher Ground that's part of Kids Across America, and the group decided to help out for a week in Henryville.
The plan, King says, "is to let people see God instead of us."
Besides the town's undying appreciation, King received a plaque and cake for being the 10,000th person to volunteer.
Beverly Knight with March 2 Recovery says there's still plenty of rebuilding to do four months after the tornadoes struck.

"There's still so much left to do," Knight said. "We have not started the rebuild process yet. We're still removing debris, repairing roofs. We're still doing some demo for homes that were not completely destroyed by the storms."
Despite the heat, Knight says volunteers have packed the Henryville Community Church all summer. She's grateful to everyone, including youth groups and young people who have decided to spend their summer helping others.
"There are so many other things they could be doing," Knight said. "And we're just truly amazed that they keep coming in. And they work so hard when they get here."
