Fatal crash kills 3 members of Louisville family

LOUISVILLE, KY (WDRB) -- A rollover crash that killed three members of a Louisville family returning home from Tennessee might have been caused by a blind spot, a family member says.

Ashley Catlett, who lost her father, stepmother and sister in crash, says their deaths "really haven't sunk in yet."

Authorities say the SUV carrying the Louisville family rolled over after being clipped by another vehicle Friday on a section of Interstate 75 in Whitley County near Kentucky's border with Tennessee. The crash backed up traffic for miles on the interstate.

Ashley Catlett lost her father, 38-year old Brian Catlett; stepmother, 31-year-old Ambeanna Catlett; and younger sister 15-year-old Savannah Catlett, 15.

"I never thought I'd lose my family at a young age, especially much less my sister," Ashley Catlett said in an interview with WDRB News.

Her family was returning from a holiday trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee when their SUV was clipped by another truck and rolled over.

Ambeanna and Savannah died at the scene. Brian died at the hospital.

Ashley had stayed behind in Louisville at her father's request.

"I'm pregnant," Catlett said. "Five-and-a-half months pregnant. And he didn't feel it was safe just hiking and the atmosphere."

It's a reality she's still trying to grasp.

"I see it as my second chance -- I could've been in that car," Catlett said. "I also see it as they are gone -- I wasn't there."

Since the crash, she's worn a bracelet that bears her sister's name and has received an outpouring of sympathy notes from complete strangers.

"I cry and I miss 'em. It's definitely something I wouldn't wish on anyone else," Catlett said. "Losing one person is hard enough, much less losing all three."

Visitation is set for Wednesday, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Foreman's Funeral Home. The funeral/burial ceremony will be held at Resthaven on Bardstown Road on Thursday at 11 a.m.
