REPORT: I'll Have Another was ailing well before retiring

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I'll Have Another was ailing well before he was retired from racing.

The horse was pulled out of the Belmont a day before the race was run, and retired due to a tendon injury.

The New York Times reports that veterinary records show the horse was being treated with painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs in the weeks after his Preakness win.

It also reports that X-rays of the colt's front ankles and knees taken four days after that race showed I'll Have Another had osteoarthritis.
