Indiana drought may lead to more mosquitoes

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Indiana's record setting drought means less pesky mosquitoes in the backyard, but there's a downside.

Marion County mosquito control biologists say the dry conditions essentially wiped out large populations of mosquitoes born in springtime flood water.

But there's a second breed of mosquitoes thriving that is capable of transmitting West Nile Virus.

"Now, the second kind of mosquito are culex mosquitoes or container breeding mosquitoes," says Shawn Moore, of Marion County Mosquito Control. "This is the mosquito that will breed in containers, clogged gutters, pockets of water that tend to resist drying out even in the driest of conditions."

Moore's advice for homeowners is to remove any standing water that may attract those mosquitoes.
