CRAWFORD BLOG: How much do UK and U of L athletics spend on marketing?

After writing about the long-running billboard back-and-forth between UK and U of L this morning, I got to wondering just how much money each school spends on athletic marketing.

The most detailed number I could find comes from the financial reports each school filed with the NCAA on last year's expenses. These aren't the EADA reports filed with the U.S. Department of Education, but more detailed reports required by the NCAA.

You'll notice an overall disparity right off the bat, because U of L outscources much of its marketing to Nelligan Sports. Still, it's interesting to look at.

One UK fan asked me today, "For the costs of all those billboards, how much could UK have put into a little facility perk here or there for football?" It's an interesting question, and one I'll try to dig up an answer to, even as I think I saw yet another UK billboard up in Spaghetti Junction heading toward the I-64 East, I-71 North split just today.

Anyway, in easy-to-read chart form, you'll note that while UK outspends U of L greatly in overall marketing, U of L outspends UK in football marketing.
