JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. -- Lane closures on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge and northbound Interstate 65 ramp closures are expected to continue through the middle of next week due to unanticipated repairs to the Indiana bridge approach.
The I-65 bridge over the Ohio River remains restricted to one lane for northbound and two lanes for southbound traffic. Vehicles wider than nine feet are restricted from traveling through the work zone. Ramps from westbound I-64 and southbound I-71 to northbound I-65 and the northbound I-65 Exit 0 to downtown Jeffersonville are expected to reopen the middle of next week.
Westbound I-64 and southbound I-71 traffic should follow the signed detour via I-264.
MAC Construction and Excavating out of New Albany is repairing and repaving the Kennedy Bridge and four I-65 ramp bridges under contract with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is sharing in the costs. As part of this work, crews removed expansion joints where the Indiana approach abuts the I-65 Bridge and discovered more corrosion underneath than was anticipated.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is responsible for maintenance of the Indiana approach, and is performing the additional approach repairs through the KYTC contract. Materials needed are available, but unfortunately these repairs cannot be completed within the earlier timeframe anticipated to reopen all lanes of the bridge.
The Kennedy Bridge will remain open to traffic as repairs are made. Once approach repairs are completed, the remaining concrete driving surface will be poured at the north end of the bridge and reopened the middle of next week.
Ramps from westbound I-64 and southbound I-71 to northbound I-65 and the northbound I-65 Exit 0 to Downtown Jeffersonville as shown in red on the attached color-coded map are currently closed. The following ramps listed below as shown in yellow on the attached map will remain closed for the duration of the project:
- The exit ramp from eastbound I-64 to northbound I-65 in Kentucky
- The exit ramp from southbound I-65 to Market Street in Indiana
- The entrance ramp from Court Avenue to southbound I-65 in Indiana
