More construction delays on the Kennedy Bridge

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It will now be several days before a second northbound lane across the Kennedy Bridge reopens.

Crews planned to reopen another lane Friday, but that is now delayed until further notice.

Construction workers discovered more corrosion when they tried to replace expansion joints on the Indiana approach to the bridge on I-65.

This isn't the only issue they've come across.

Two weeks ago, crews reduced traffic to one lane going northbound to pour more concrete, and needed bigger equipment to do so.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is confident they'll still finish as planned, on August 15th.

Andrea Clifford, a spokesperson for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, says, "When you uncover things like this it justifies the amount of money that we're spending, the closures that are put in place because we definitely want this bridge in good shape for the foreseeable future."

There is another set of ramp closures scheduled to start on Saturday.

Ramps from 64 east and west going south on 65 close Saturday night at 8 p.m. through the end of July.
