Section of I-65 North closed until Monday morning

LOUISVILLE, Ky.  (WDRB) -- Ongoing road construction includes closing a portion of a major interstate through the heart of Louisville from Friday evening through early Monday morning.

Interstate 65 North from the Watterson Expressway to the Chestnut Street overpass near "hospital curve" is closed to make repaving more efficient for crews and limit the amount of overall time for lane closures, Kentucky transportation officials have said.

The closing comes as repaving on the Kennedy Bridge has taken longer than anticipated, and as an estimated 35,000 people come downtown for the Forecastle music festival.

"They keep doing things and there's something else different, and then something else again. Delays this and delays that. It's just bad timing!" said frustrated Louisville driver Kirk Matala.

Drivers on I-64 also won't be able to exit to on I-65 from any direction starting Saturday  night.  That's when additional ramps are scheduled to be closed until the end of the month.

Nearby businesses, like Louisville Pizza Pub, say they already noticed fewer customers Friday, and worry what this means for the weekend.

"I know the community coming in from the road has been a big business for us, so with it being closed down, it's going to hurt our business a lot this weekend," says Courtney Atcher, Manager of Louisville Pizza Pub.

Also look for lane closures on I-65 in far southern Jefferson County and in Bullitt County, Ky., next week for installation of cable barriers in the medians.

The two video stories from Friday afternoon contain graphic maps to explain further the various closings and detours.
