Utility: Fault sends smoke from Indy manhole - WDRB 41 Louisville - News, Weather, Sports Community

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A power company says a fault in an underground cable caused smoke to rise from a downtown Indianapolis manhole and briefly cut power to about 400 customers.

Indianapolis Power and Light spokesman Brad Riley said power was restored to most customers within 90 minutes of the incident reported at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Indianapolis Fire Department spokesman Lt. Larry Tracy characterized the incident as an explosion, but Riley says no explosion or fire occurred.

No injuries occurred.

Riley says the incident was different from a series of downtown manhole explosions last year that brought IPL under the scrutiny of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. IPL later installed locks on 150 downtown manhole covers prior to the Super Bowl in February.
