Former Kentucky lawmaker laid to rest

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A former Kentucky lawmaker was honored today by family, friends, and others who served alongside him.

Dewayne Bunch was laid to rest in Williamsburg today. He died Wednesday, more than a year after suffering a significant head injury.

It happened while he was trying to break up a fight at Whitley County High School -- where he taught math. His head hit the cafeteria floor after he was struck by a stray punch.

Bunch resigned from politics because of his injuries, and his wife Regina is now serving in his seat.

"He and his wife Regina had a tremendous amount of faith and their prayers and faith got them this far and they'll help Regina get through this and the rest of the family," said Kentucky state representative Bob DeWeese.

The 50 year old was also a veteran of the national guard. Governor Beshear ordered flags to fly at half staff in Bunch's honor.
