LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A mother and her two young sons were shot and killed over the weekend and homicide detectives are still trying to piece together what happened.
Family members of the victims tell us they believe this is a tragic case of domestic violence, and they believe the shooter -- the children's father -- is now recovering at University Hospital after killing the family.
Police were called to 6100 block of Maravian Drive in the Hunters Trace subdivision in PRP sometime before 6 a.m. Sunday. . That's where they found 26-year-old Sade' Goldsmith and her 5- and 6-year-old sons -- John and Jon'tee Devine-- dead inside the home. They had been shot.
"They definitely believe the person that's in the hospital at this point recovering from the gunshot wounds is the one that took these young individuals' lives," said Christopher 2X.
Police also a found a man -- who has not yet been identified by police but family members believe he is the shooter, and the father -- in the home with a gunshot wound.
That man was taken to University Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
They definitely believe the person that is in the hospital right now...young individuals lives
Police believe the man had a relationship with Goldsmith but they aren't saying if they married or if he was living at the home.
Neighbors say the family had just moved in a few weeks ago.
"It's just hard to believe," said Duane Bostick, who lives nearby. "We figured we'd be watching those young kids grow up back there. We're all just very shocked and it's a very sad day."
The woman's mother says the couple had a history of domestic violence and that she was very concerned about some of the incidents her daughter had told her about.
The coroner's office will perform autopsies on the mom and her two children today while police continue their investigation.
